Reflecting on the Journey: More than Just a Ride
When we set out on that 1,700km journey from the Gold Coast to Melbourne, it wasn’t just about cycling. It was about something far bigger, for our son and brother, Dan, and the relentless fight against brain cancer.
As we reflect on that ride, it’s hard to put into words just how much more it became than we ever imagined. What started as a way to raise funds for brain cancer research turned into the first of many fundraisers we’ll continue to pursue, but it was also a celebration of the incredible community we built along the way. The support, the messages, the connections—it all reinforced how much power there is when people come together for a cause.
Yes, it was tough. We’re not professional athletes, not by any stretch of the imagination. We were well past our “prime” (though we like to think it was the perfect age for a challenge), and every kilometre pushed us to our limits. Training was a balance of pushing ourselves and doing everything we could to avoid injury. There were moments of doubt, of course, but there were also moments of pure joy, shared laughs, and the kind of camaraderie that you don’t often get when you’re riding solo.
But more than the physical toll, what kept us going was Dan’s strength. He had faced challenges that most people couldn’t even fathom, endless hospital visits, gruelling treatments, and a battle for life every single day. Compared to that, riding 1,700km was a small gesture, but it was a powerful one. It was our way of standing up and saying, “We see you, Dan. We support you, and we’re fighting alongside you.”
This ride, and the fundraiser, didn’t just raise money; it sparked a movement. We are proud to say this was the first of many more to come. It was about raising awareness, building a community, and making a lasting impact that goes beyond dollars and cents. We’re just getting started.
To everyone who supported us, shared our story, or simply cheered us on from afar—you’ve been a huge part of this journey. And while the ride may be over, the fight against brain cancer is far from finished. This is only the beginning.
Thanks for riding with us, and for standing with us in the fight against brain cancer.
Together, we’re stronger.
Michael and Josh Gordon
